Private Equity at your door step

Private equity is not a popular jargon nor are its investments often announced in the media. In most cases this is because private equity invests in industrial or specialised firms in markets going through important transformations. For instance, you are not expected to have heard the name of the German metal tubes company Rattay acquired this summer by Luxempart or of HIS Towers of Strengh, the African group installing communication towers in several African countries which received investment from four different investors in Luxembourg.

Nevertheless, private equity investments are all around us and you may even been consuming some of its products. Last year Kharis Capital, a platform bringing together wealthy families and former entrepreneurs, acquired the representation of Burger King and Quick in Belgium and Luxembourg. The acquisition lead to the creation of 40 new shops in the region and the creation of 360 new jobs. Less accessible but similarly popular, Aston Martin is now partially owned by Invest Industrial, a leading European private equity with a fully-fledged office in Luxembourg.

The biggest private equity footprint lays, however, in the financial sector. Not only private equity employs directly over 6000 individuals in Luxembourg as it owns several key firms of the financial center. SGG and Alterdomus, both with origin in Luxembourg and counting 840 and 1150 staff worldwide, respectively, are two of the major private-equity backed firms. TMF, another financial services provider with origins in the Netherlands and operating in Luxembourg, has recently been acquired by CVC, one of the world’s largest private equity firms and which also has a strong foothold in Luxembourg.
